Picturesque Portimao is the western Algarve's largest town and hits all the right notes as an energetic holiday destination and as a base to explore this captivating coastline. Whether you want to do nothing more than sit on silky-soft sands and apply the odd dollop of sun cream or shop 'til you drop – there's something for everyone here. The sleek promenade will charm the pants off you for a start. A pretty cobbled walkway lined with swaying palm trees is the perfect spot for a stroll day or night. It's also where the yachting set park up, but if you can't beat 'em, join a relaxing river cruise or a big game-fishing trip where you might reel in a swordfish or two. If you've come for the beaches, you won't be disappointed – more like spoilt for choice with what's on your doorstep. Praia Da Rocha, to the south is perhaps the Algarve's most famous beach and the place where the region's holidays started. Just next door, chilled out Praia Da Rocha is a surfers paradise, so head here to strike a pose. Praia de Alvor is close to the old fishing village of Alvor and stretches for 2km with undulating sand dunes that create the perfect suntrap. And if you want lie back in tranquillity, you'll find no end of small, secluded coves scalloped along the shores. When it comes to eating out, charcoal-grilled sardines rule in Portimao – it's their big thing, and they're fat, tasty and gorgeous with a glass of Portuguese red. There are plenty of restaurants dotted about with traditional Portuguese dishes on the menu as well as international delicacies. End your evening at a bustling bar or shift up a gear in neighbouring Praia Da Rocha where you'll find a sparkling cosmopolitan scene.
