Guia Holidays

Postcard-pretty Guia has two main claims to fame - chicken piri-piri and Cliff Richard. The former you'll find in the many authentic Algarvian restaurants. And the latter? He can often be found at his own gastronomic pride and joy, the Adega do Cantor or 'Winery of the Singer', just outside the village. You can drop in for a tour and a glass of Vida Nova - not to mention stunning views from the top of the Quinta do Miradouro where the winery is located. If you fancy a day or two at the seaside, it's not far to some of the Algarve's best beaches. Gale, with its vast stretch of golden sand. Sao Rafael, with its amazing rock formations. And Castelo, a series of small cove beaches, interspersed with strangely shaped cliffs, stone stacks and blowholes. As for family fun, Zoomarine is the place to head to. Tickets provide entry to both the marine zoo - home to dolphins, seals and more - and the water park, where you can make a splash on the slides. If you're into azulejos, the Portuguese answer to Roman mosaics, take a stroll to Guia's quaint little parish church, where you'll find some fine examples from the 17th century.

Holiday in Guia, and you'll have performing neighbours. Whether you choose to visit the performing dolphins and parrots at Zoomarine, or drop in on Cliff Richard's famous winery is up to you! The Adega do Cantor aptly translates as 'The Winery of the Singer', and you can take a tour, and then savour a glass of Vida Nova along with the spectacular view. Of course if you're taking a cheap holiday in Guia with the family, then there's no contest. Zoomarine will win every time! No surprise really, when you think about the seal and dolphin shows, and the attraction's water park where you can make a bit of a splash yourself.

As for beaches, there are plenty to choose from. Head due south and within 15 minutes you'll discover some of the Algarve's quieter gems, such as the lengthy, uncrowded stretch of sand at Praia Da Gale, or the sculptured coves and cliffs at Praia do Castelo. If you're more the shop and sunbathe on the same day type, then entertaining Albufeira with its seven beaches is just down the road.

In the evening, a self catering holiday takes on a very different meaning with Guia's tempting range of restaurants. Whether you choose traditional favourites such as chicken peri peri with chilli marinade, or a gourmet French menu, you'll find that Guia does them very well indeed. If you're cooking yourself, pick up fresh produce at the daily fish, fruit and vegetable market.
