Goldra Holidays
If you're in search of the Algarve's traditional charms, Goldra is a good place to hang your hat. Located well inland, it's typically Portuguese with a sleepy atmosphere and stunning scenery all around. Staying here's about enjoying the simple pleasures of Portugal. Chatting with the locals. Communing with the countryside. And sharing a carafe of wine as the sun goes down. The said, you're by no means cut off from the real world. Hop in the car and you can be at the coast in a few minutes. Stylish resorts Vale Do Lobo and Quinta Do Lago are both just a few miles to the south. But the nearest town to Goldra is Loule, where old rubs shoulders with new to fascinating effect. We're talking a busy modern metropolis and a snazzy, souped up church intertwined with narrow cobbled alleyways and an ancient monastery. But if you're feeling a little contemplative, it may be time for a spell in the 'Sulky People's Garden' - a palm-shaded green space to the west of the Sao Clemente church. Or maybe lose yourself in the magnificent melee that is the Municipal Market, packed with colourful stalls and shops selling everything from cheese to chickens. Goldra's the perfect holiday escape.
Sundown is a very special time of day when you holiday in Goldra. For this is when the blazing sun lights up the panoramic views of the coastline, providing quite a spectacle to accompany your early evening aperitif. Perched on a hill near Loule, Goldra commands views which stretch east from the offshore islands near to Faro to Albufeira in the west - quite a sight at any time of day.
This is a sleepy little village, where you can hide away from the hurly-burly down on the coast, and soak up the mood of a more traditional Algarve. However summer holidays in Goldra needn't be all peace and quiet. For you're just down the road from the busy market town of Loule, where you can shop for local produce and handicrafts, shoulder to shoulder with the Portuguese in the towns famous, covered marketplace. If Loule is one gear too high, then try the traditional village of Santa Barbara De Nexe - this is a favourite with expats, so you'll find a tempting mixture of traditional and international cuisine in the surprisingly large number of restaurants here.
Even if you've found a bargain holiday to Goldra, you can still live the high life by visiting the classy resorts of Vale Do Lobo and Quinta Do Lago just 15 minutes drive away. Here, world class golf courses, boutique style shopping and fine restaurants add a note of sophistication to anyone's holiday. Just beyond, you'll come to a run of spangly beaches washed by the Atlantic.
