Ferreiras Holidays

If you prefer to be away from the hustle and bustle of the beach resorts, but still stay in touch with your sun-worshipping side, Ferreiras could be just the ticket. This charming little town is just 'away from it all' enough to be refreshingly laid back. But it's also just a few miles from Albufeira and the golden sands of Praia da Oura. The real beauty of staying in Ferreiras is that it gives you a chance to immerse yourself in local life. Farmers arrive early in the morning at the local fish and vegetable market. And there's an excellent bakery for fresh breakfast bread. As for restaurants, there are several to choose from - the traditional eateries serve some of the best chicken piri-piri you'll find this side of Faro. If you're seriously into shopping, you can flex your spending muscles with some retail therapy at the largest mall in the Algarve - packed with more than 100 stores, as well as a cinema, bowling alley and a food court, it's enough to send your credit card to meltdown central. Shopping aside, keen golfers will be in their element with several courses within easy reach, including Salgados, a challenging 18-hole links course with stunning sea views. And for a family day out there's the Zoomarine Park over near Guia. The park's resident company of dolphins, seals and parrots perform shows throughout the day, while other attractions include an aquarium, a cinema, a sea museum, a funfair and a swimming pool with slides and whirlpools.

Base your holiday in Ferreiras and you can twin the charms of a Portuguese country town with the buzz and beaches of the coastal resorts. For this is a town of farmers, traditional fare and afternoon siestas, but just a few miles down the road lie the golden sands and jaunty restaurants of Albufeira. Any number of seductive beaches are within a short drive - Praia d'Oura for windsurfing and jet-skis, or Praia Da Gale for 5 long kilometres of blissful, sandy peace.

Perhaps you've booked a last minute holiday to Ferreiras on a whim. If so, you've chosen well if you want to explore all that the Algarve has to offer. For within a few minutes you can be on the main road, winging your way west to picturesque Lagos or east to the handicraft market in Loule and the vast offshore beaches near Faro. Golfers are a short putt from several superb courses - try Salgados with its panoramic sea views, or the renowned Sheraton Pine Cliffs near Vilamoura.

If you're holidaying with children, then your summer holiday in Ferreiras is really looking up. For right on the doorstep you'll find Zoomarine, where dolphins, seals, parrots and waterslides await to delight the little ones. Bigger holidaymakers might be delighted by the shopping at the largest mall in the Algarve, and gourmets will appreciate the mouthwatering sucking pig and chicken peri peri served in Ferreiras, judged by many to be the best in the area.
