Espiche Holidays
The village of Espiche is not far from Praia Da Luz, one of the western Algarve's liveliest resorts. But it might as well be on another planet. Steeped in old world charm and oozing traditional atmosphere, it offers a chance to step back to a time when this part of the country had never heard of tourism and the inhabitants earned their livings from farming and fishing. But that's not to say that Espiche lacks life. The village has a real sense of community and the locals love to throw a party, often with the flimsiest of excuses. Or just while away an evening in one of the bars or restaurants with a plate of grilled sardines and some Barraida wine or maybe a glass or two of chilled Porto branco. Looking for a little sand-time? This part of the coast has brilliant beaches, and while the one at Praia Da Luz doesn't let the side down, it's worth travelling just a bit further west to places like Praia de Almadena and Praia de Salena, set against the backdrop of a natural park with breathtaking clifftop views. If you're into golf, you can be on the fairway in no time, as there are no less than four good courses within a few minutes' drive. As for other activities, well, horse riding through the beautiful countryside comes pretty high on the 'must-do' list.
Holidays in Espiche give you the chance to tuck yourself away in rural Portugal, with beaches, bars and cheerful resorts right next door. Praia Da Luz is your nearest holiday town - a favourite with families for its inviting beach and winding, whitewashed lanes brimming with laid back restaurants. Just along the coast lies Burgau - a working fishing village that has opened its arms to holidaymakers too. It's a lovely walk between the two along the coast.
However return to Espiche at the end of the day and you know that you're seeing a more authentic side of the Algarve. For this is a thriving community, where bars and restaurants are frequented by locals as well as those on their summer holiday in Espiche. Festivals are jolly affairs, and you might catch sight of the local menfolk slithering around on a greasy pole, or competing to 'catch the pig' as they race through the streets.
There's more than enough to do in the local area, even if you've booked a cheap holiday to Espiche and are watching your budget. Firstly, the Algarve's spectacular beaches are the best free entertainment you could wish for, and this area is blessed with gems such as Praia de Almadena and Praia de Salena. For a spot of culture, you only have to explore the picturesque streets of Lagos, where street performers entertain, and tanks of big pincered crabs and lobsters delight children and hungry adults alike outside the restaurants.
