Caramujeira Holidays
'It's rural and rustic, but sleepy little Caramujeira is far from being off the beaten track.'
Caramujeira is a charming little countryside resort that offers superb scenery without isolation. It has a few bars and restaurants of its own. But if you're looking for a more lively atmosphere, you're just a short drive from Carvoeiro, where you'll find a wider selection of eateries and some nightlife. As for the beaches around Caramujeira, they certainly come up to scratch. Think golden sands overlooked by towering cliffs and odd-shaped rock formations that create fascinating shadows as the sun goes down. Two of the best are Praia da Marinha a huge stretch of sand with dramatic, orange-hued cliffs all around. And beautiful Benagil, the archetypal Algarve cove beach, with tall rocks that trap the sun, multi coloured fishing boats and quaint little fishermen's huts. Beaches asides, if you want to snap a view that's sure to impress the folks back home, take a trip to Vila Senhora da Rocha. As well as enjoying the coastal sights, you can also wander around the bright white chapel that stands precariously on the cliff edge. It dates from at least the early 13th century and has been a place of pilgrimage for many years. After dark, Caramujeira will never set the world on fire. But if you're happy to settle down with a plate of arroz de marisco (Portugal's answer to paella) and a glass of vinho verde, this charming corner of the Algarve has everything you need for a great holiday.
