Around the village, country roads snake through fields scattered with almond orchards, citrus trees and white-painted farmhouses. Here, time seems to be marked only by the sound of sheep bells and farmyard chickens. And it's here, out in the hills that you'll find traditional restaurants to dine out on hearty chicken piri piri and cataplana, washed down by the essential vinho verde. When the tourist track calls, Vilamoura's golf courses, sandy beaches and marina-side restaurants are ten minutes' drive away. But if you're sold on traditional Portugal, your first stop should be Loule. This historic town's Saturday market is more experience than event - bowling over visitors with its scores of vibrant food and handicraft stalls.

And just a short hop to the south lies Praia de Falesia - with 5 kilometres of glorious sand, it's beach enough for anyone!
